your first move

Give us a call at (707) 395-7550 to connect with our office manager, who can answer questions and help you schedule.

Prefer email?

Reach us at info@bridgestounderstanding.org to ask for more info or to set up your first appointment.

After we talk—whether by phone or email—we’ll schedule your first session so we can get to know you, understand what’s going on, and figure out how we can help.

what to take care of

before your first appointment

We’ll send you some quick online forms—consent paperwork and short questionnaires—to help us understand your needs. Please complete them before your session.

If there’s a custody arrangement or you’re the legal guardian of a minor, upload or bring those documents with you.

We’ll ask you to fill out a credit card authorization form. We keep a card on file so payments don’t interrupt your session. (We can’t accept advance payments or run a “tab.”) We take cash, checks, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, and FSA/HSA cards.

If you're using insurance, we will request a copy of your insurance card (front and back) prior to your first appointment, so that we may verify eligibility and benefits information.

what to expect at your first visit

Your first session is an assessment. It lasts about an hour. This conversation will help us get the full picture.

For children and families, we usually do three assessment appointments:

  • First, we meet with the parent or guardian to hear your perspective.

  • Next, we meet with your child or children.

  • Finally, we bring everyone together to review what we’ve learned, share recommendations, and—if it feels right—create a treatment plan.

For couples, we typically start with a joint session, then meet with each partner individually before moving into ongoing sessions together.
